Um, Jennifer? - “Fishy”
Indie rock duo Um, Jennifer?, from New York City, have just released the sublime new track, “Fishy.”
“Fishy” follows the high-energy, raw, and unapologetically brash formula that Um, Jennifer? do so well. The track is heavily rooted in garage rock revival, blending with ease punk’s aggression with rock ‘n’ roll’s swagger. The overall vibe feels elegantly chaotic and rebellious, but also a celebratory, bursting with attitude and adrenaline.
Pushed forward by a tight and snappy drum groove that shifts from relentless rhythms to sudden stops, creating an erratic sense of ebb and flow, the track is clothed by crunchy and almost dissonant guitar layers. Coupled with the thick, deep bass, these layers defiantly weave with an infectious rawness. From the first note, you just know “Fishy” has been designed to get the crowd going during a live set... but one of those gigs where anything could happen.
Full of bravado, playful showmanship, and attitude, the vocals feel as if they are delivered with a sense of reckless, nonchalant abandon. With stellar backing vocals, the performance is theatrical, sarcastic and nothing short of brilliant. Speaking on the release of “Fishy,” the band called it “...a song about having the worst night of your life but still looking snatched.”
Unpredictable, unfiltered, and uncompromising, “Fishy” is the uncontrollable, under-two-minute track you’ve been looking for.
