TOVI - “More For Me”
Alberta-born, Toronto-based indie artist Rebecca Emms, aka TOVI, has just released the brooding trip-hop-infused dark pop single, “More For Me.”
“More For Me” has a moody and eclectic vibe that effortlessly blends electronic music and pop. It feels almost like a lost single from the 1990s, sitting somewhere in the cinematic realm of bands like Garbage and Portishead. The track is driven by an intricate drum groove that is both punchy and atmospheric, permeating an urban feel as it hypnotically pulses.
Staccato pulses of guitar fill out the composition, strikingly enhancing the tight and tense vibe of the music. The cinematic atmosphere is brought to the forefront with the introduction of smooth, rich, and introspective saxophone tones, which verge on a psychedelic jazz freak-out similar to “The Right Stuff” by Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds.
Contrasting the music are the breathy, haunting, and intimate vocals that feel stunningly sultry and vulnerable. Supported by tender harmonies, the entire vocal delivery seems to ethereally float above the more aggressive textural elements.
On the track, TOVI adds: “This song is about having avoidant tendencies — not being able to say the hard things or ask for what I need. It’s about only getting knee-deep and missing out because of it.”
Dark and adventurous, “More For Me” strikes a sophisticated balance between introspective, left-field elements and urban angst, creating a sound and feel that is confidently musique noire.
