The Marley Woods - “Good Times”
From St. Louis, The Marley Woods have just released their debut indie pop rock single, “Good Times.”
It is easy to sound like your song came from the 1960s and that you have maybe smoked a bit too much Ganja… and indulged in a bit too much red wine than you should have. The difficulty is making it sound fresh and compelling. Whether it is the touches of flute mellotron, fuzzy electric or warm acoustic guitar, you can tell that there was a sense of joy when The Marley Woods picked up their instruments.
“Good Times” has a really lush, retro drum groove which anchors the track beautifully and imbues a gentle, rolling rhythm which you cannot help but get swept up in. When coupled with the other percussive elements that are tastefully thrown in, it brings to mind “Sloop John B” by The Beach Boys. Melodically, the song feels like a 1960s pop-folk-rock inspired beast which leans delightfully towards the anthemic. Catchy, warm, carefree, nostalgic – the last band I came across that made music with this flavour were the tragically underrated English band The Bees.
The vocals, though, really are the standout feature of “Good Times.” Warm, laid-back, soulful, and dreamy– the performance is richly layered, much like a ‘60s ‘British Invasion’ band. After a few plays, you will be singing along to the lyrics that are awash with strong, uplifting vibes. “Good Times” fills a hole in your music catalogue you didn’t know needed filling, and we look forward to what The Marley Woods serve up next.
