Joan & The Giants - “How Could You?”

Boorloo/ Perth-based indie-pop-rock band Joan & The Giants have just released the daydreamy and energetic sounds of “How Could You?

This track is founded on an upbeat rhythm that does not completely align with our usual melancholic vibe, but “How Could You?” is so catchy that we found it completely irresistible. It begins with a vibey guitar melody from guitarist Aaron Birch, strewn across the top of a lo-fi beat, but soon expands into a a firecracker of a full-band production.

Lead vocalist Grace Newton-Wordsworth contains just enough Jade Bird and Courtney Barnett in her delivery that we immediately became fans, also adding a bit of grit and twang for the connoisseurs of Americana. And it is ultimately the lyrical content that gives “How Could You?” a darker mood, effectively landing it within our wheelhouse.

The beat here is quite relentless and it is not at all difficult to imagine “How Could You?” blasting from any stage at any venue. The band is tight and confident, which fully justifies the fact that they’ve shared bills with P!NK  and Tone and I. And with lyrics like “What did I do to deserve this… You know I could kill you…,” we feel that the track may very well end up on all those playlists reserved for picking up the pieces of a failed relationship.
