Taxidermy - “Today”

Copenhagen-based Taxidermy have just released the post-punk track, “Today.” This ‘modern-day doomsday sermon’ is all about raw groove and it will leave you completely spellbound.

Today” opens with raw and frantic electric guitar riffs that hypnotically weave an urgent ostinato pattern. This not only creates an infectious sense of rhythmic drive, but also permeates a sense of agitation and tension. Pushing the track forward is the relentless drum beat, which injects subtle variations in the form of thrashing drum fills. The bass pulsates heavily underneath, while another electric guitar subtly adds texture with staccato grooves and chugging chords.

The track has a wonderful sense of ebb and flow, which is simply impossible to put into words due to the many twists and turns the song takes. Just when you think “Today“ will die back, Taxidermy shifts into top gear with aggressive, fuzzed-out layers hellbent on battering your head until you yield. The wall of noise is breathtaking. Over the dynamic break, the layers are stripped away to a collage of dissonant guitar noise, injecting a heathy dose of the avant-garde before the drums begin to imbue a sense of danceable energy. The song ends on another innovative moment in a torrent of raw intensity via experimental soundscaping.

The vocal delivery shifts from phases of monotone nonchalance to punkish, raw authenticity that passionately but always acts as a steady rock through the swirl of noise. “Today” is a well-constructed and highly inventive composition. The track is Taxidermy’s second single of their upcoming debut EP, Coin.
