Oh My Sun - “5 Pieces”
London-based indie duo Oh My Sun have just released their debut single: “5 Pieces,” a track that borrows from astrology and symbolism to traverse the emotional carnage at the demise of a relationship.
Wonderfully melancholic subject matter aside, Oh My Sun have a really sweet vintage vibe occurring within “5 Pieces,” most notably within the song’s rhythm section. The beat hits rather deep and hard for a more stripped-back arrangement, and the seemingly palm-muted notes from the bass add a classic, early-1970s punchiness to the mix.
On top of the driving force of the rhythm, an acoustic guitar punctuates the snare hits amidst some psychedelically-tinged artifacts that lean into the realm of the otherworldly. The overall sound is one that has been made quite popular by such acts as Big Thief and Alabama Shakes, but these comparisons end once the vocal performance begins.
And this is where “5 Pieces” truly excels, by instilling a modern vocal delivery into a track that otherwise permeates a classic, nostalgic soundscape– likely one of the reasons that the duo refers to their brand of indie as “nostalgic absurdism.” While it does not take long to fall in love with this track, patience will reward you with one of the most satisfying hooks that we’ve heard in quite some time, which, again, harkens back to the ‘70s.
You will likely detect a bit of Fleetwood Mac in this one, and for a debut single, “5 Pieces” has us extremely excited to see where Oh My Sun go next. Between their vintage-imbued production and the clever way that they borrow from contemporary literature, we will, no doubt, be featuring them again in the very near future.
