mokina - “sinner”
From Montreal, indie songstress mokina returns to the blog with “sinner,” the second single from her forthcoming EP, Mirage.
After a few quick notes from a vintage-tinged electric guitar, “sinner” expands into a full-band production, complete with a lo-fi and retro rhythm section and an additional layer of warbling guitar chords. The vibe is extremely chill and the track glistens with a creamy, 1960s-era production, topped off with the muted notes of a melodic bass line.
If you’ve been keeping up with our blog, you will already know that mokina initially won us over with her astounding vocal ability and we’re very pleased to inform you that her delivery on “sinner” only further justifies this. Here, her performance has been wonderfully multitracked, with a semi-staccato distribution over the verses, then a falsetto utilized on the refrain.
Over the course of the track, new elements emerge, such as the delicate sounds of keys, a dash of mellotron and horns, and some exquisitely placed auxiliary vocals. The result is a dreamy and introspective number that will, more than likely, keep you coming back for multiple listens.
