Mike Maurice - “Telephone”

From Biddeford, Maine, singer-songwriter Mike Maurice has just released the warm and heartfelt “Telephone.”

The beginning of the tune is a wonderful waltz that includes the gentle sounds of acoustic guitar and banjo, with delightful flourishes of ethereal pedal steel soaring across the top. The vibe is raw and rather melancholic, and it did not take us more than ten seconds to decide that it belonged on our blog.

Maurice’s vocal follows suit, imbuing “Telephone” with an authentic and honest sense of character, without any needless pandering to modern production tomfoolery. The lyrics enter your ears at face value, just as rich and delicate as the emotion poured into their delivery.

As the track progresses, it picks up some additional musical passengers, including the magnificent swells of cello, all neatly held together by a thick polish of reverberation. And to ensure that “Telephone” found its maximum potential, Maurice enlisted Danny Black (Good Old War, Gregory Alan Isakov).

Mike Maurice’s “Telephone” is an introspective and atmospheric journey through the realm of authentic modern folk music. If you only have time to hear one new song today, this is the one.
