meka - “Tomato Song”
American singer-songwriter Melissa Lingo, aka meka, has just released the timeless indie folk track, “Tomato Song.”
“Tomato Song” is an incredibly nostalgic sounding track, so much so that would not feel out of place if someone said it was a classic from the 1960s or 1970s. Right from the offset the production feels like a breath of fresh air in an era where we are bombarded by hooks and clever mixing tricks. Driven by a simple yet poignant arrangement of piano, acoustic guitar, drums and bass the track flows with ease allowing the vocal of meka to take centre stage.
meka’s intimate vocal is simply beautiful as it expressively and tenderly weaves a soul stirring melody. For me, meka’s voice isn’t just delivering the tracks lyrical story… it is the story. Fragile in places with a slight vibrato, the breathy performance is luminous.
On the track meka adds: “Some things are so unbearably sad or unbearably beautiful that it’s hard for me to tell a dream from life from nightmare. My mom does sleep in the garden every summer, protecting her peas and strawberries from deer and rabbits, and you can usually find me perched somewhere with a cigarette, bargaining with death. ‘Tomato song’ is ripe with rot, an ode to the in between, to the Graveyard of Dreams, which also happens to be the Fertile Compost for Hope.”
Heartfelt, graceful and evocative, “Tomato Song” is the second single to be taken from meka’s forthcoming album, The Rabbit, slated for released on May 21st via Dumont Dumont.
