Marisa Finley - “Hallelujah”

From Canada, singer-songwriter Marisa Finley has just released her debut single, “Hallelujah (Movin Through Ya),” a song that explores falling in love too fast.

After a brief moment of what appears to be nature foley, the song is underway with a rich production of multi-layered synth tones, dipped in a tape-warbling warmth that we find completely irresistible. A gentle, lo-fi beat urges the track forward, accompanied by the thick, round notes from a bass, bringing a significant amount of weight to the composition.

As Finley’s vocal performance begins over the verse, most of the ethereal textures are peeled away to reveal her heavy-hearted delivery. Her voice is warmly reminiscent of Clairo and Faye Webster and it truly feels like a gift to have it inside of your ears. Delicate notes from a piano intermittently appear in the arrangement, ensuring that no empty space goes to waste.

The dream-pop nature of the refrain will likely be the reason that “Hallelujah (Movin Through Ya)” becomes one of your new favorite songs and it will, indeed, move right through you. Just beyond the song’s midpoint, a smooth dynamic shift occurs, adding an ample dose of variation and welcoming an exquisite vocal harmony that has brought us back for multiple listens.

Stylistically, we feel that “Hallelujah (Movin Through Ya)” is all over the place– from George Harrison to Moby and Air and back again, there is something here for all to enjoy. We truly cannot think of a better way to introduce Finley’s sound to the world and, as far as debuts go, this one will be very difficult to beat.
