MacGregor Burns - “She Never Took a Chance On Me”

Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter MacGregor Burns has just released the reflective “She Never Took a Chance On Me.”

This track is built around the melodic groove of steady, straightforward electric and acoustic rhythm guitar. Warm, laid-back and catchy, the progression has the same tone of records from the late 1960s and early 1970s. The electric guitar has hints of chime and jangle, while the acoustic feels elegantly reflective.

Pushing the track forward is a modest, mid-tempo drum beat which perfectly suits the vibe of the track. Coupled with the warm, rounded, melodic pulse of the bass, “She Never Took a Chance On Me” is pleasingly compelling in much the same way as “Sweet Jane” by The Velvet Underground.

MacGregor Burns delivers a contemplative and understated but tuneful vocal performance. The warm tone, filled with unique nuances and hints of grit, delightfully expresses the sentiment of the lyrics with a feeling of authenticity. Surrounded by vintage-tinged aux vocal layers, the performance is a delight to hear.

Lyrically, the track explores the male gaze and reflects upon missed opportunities and romantic idealism. “She Never Took a Chance On Me” is a retro pop track filled with sweet harmonies. The song is taken from MacGregor Burns’ forthcoming album, which is slated for release later this year.
