Zam - “Piece”

From Los Angeles, Zam delves into the life of a touring musician with the indie rock track, “Piece.”

Piece” leans pleasingly into the classic pop rock palette of the 1970s, bringing to mind the lush, harmonically rich, and innovative tracks of ELO from the days when John Lennon called them the “sons of The Beatles.” The track is built upon a pleasant groove of crisp drums that create a steady, rocking swagger. This is wonderfully heightened by the warm, rounded bass that adds earworm-like harmonic complexity and rhythmic support.

Intricate and carefully crafted, dressing the groove are a variety of well-chosen, unique guitar layers. These layers vary from restrained but fizzy lead guitar and gritty staccato rhythm, to swells of smooth, reflective slide and mellow, warm acoustic guitar. Gentle electric piano further fleshes out the track with swells of retro-futuristic synths.

The vocal of Zam is light and warm throughout the track as he melodically reveals the storytelling lyrics. Surrounded by smooth, harmonising vocals, the performance is nothing short of engaging and memorable. Extensively layered yet polished and refined, “Piece” is all about the groove.
