Katie Keddie - “song4”
Nottingham-based indie artist Katie Keddie returns to the blog with a raw and emotionally-charge single: “song4.”
The track is built upon a dynamic and gradual crescendo, beginning with the rich sounds of an acoustic guitar atop a barebones rhythm. In the distance, some synthy artifacts churn, acting as an ambient pad for the otherwise sparsely recorded arrangement.
Keddie’s breathy and emotive vocal soon emerges, wonderfully double-tracked and, thus, immediately hammering down our folksy niche. She effortlessly spins a relatable subject matter that traverses the twists and turns commonly associated with relationships.
As the track progresses, new sounds rise to the surface, such as a bright beat from the drum kit and some deep bass, both of which provide a substantial amount of weight to the production. A vocal harmony also appears, allowing “song4” to extend to the far corners of the soundscape– a true delight if listening through headphones.
All of these elements grow in strength, ultimately culminating in a back half that is filled with an intense sense of urgency. In a way, “song4” mirrors the entire span of a turbulent love affair, beginning quite peacefully before erupting into a combustable fervor, then, gradually, peeling the layers away in order to, once again, find peace.
