Jo Davie - “Colder”
Brisbane-based singer-songwriter Jo Davie has just released the dreamy folk-pop sounds of “Colder,” a song that explores the demise of a relationship.
“Colder” begins with a full-band arrangement, complete with bass and drums and a seemingly endless cast of shimmering guitar tracks. In a word, the tune is a dreamy amalgamation of nostalgic notes that enters the ears as though an old, familiar feeling. And being that most of us, as humans, have experienced the profound depths of heartbreak, the sounds provide hope that “something better blooms in the spots they left behind.”
Davie’s voice follows suit, offering the listener a flawless performance that is warmly reminiscent of boygenius and Julia Jacklin. The folksy nature of her delivery leaves room for her natural talent, instead of digital production shortcuts that, as far as we’re concerned, can choke the life out of modern recordings– instead, our ears are filled with an honest, intimate, and vulnerable sonic landscape.
At the song’s crescendo, rising swells of strings intermingle with kaleidoscopic guitars and infinite textures of auxiliary vocals, resulting in a recording that you will not soon forget. “Colder” is the final single before Davie’s EP, Nothing Comes Free, releases next month.
