Holly Lovell - “Lion’s Den”

From Denver, Colorado, singer-songwriter Holly Lovell has just released the extremely raw and heart-wrenching sounds of “Lion’s Den,” a track that takes a long, hard look at the inside of addiction.

Soon after pressing the play button, we knew that we would feature “Lion’s Den” on our blog. From the immediate intimacy of Lovell’s delicate vocal performance, to the softly strummed guitar chords that sparsely populate the soundscape, listeners will find themselves instantly drawn into the authentic folksy integrity of the song.

As “Lion’s Den” progresses, a slow-churning rhythm section emerges, with a ghostly and melodic lead guitar sending some notes over the top. Subtle layers of keys and pedal steel help to round out the arrangement, bringing a fantastic sense of depth and detail to the overall production. And while all of these sounds make for one hell of a sonic journey, Lovell’s voice keeps everything up close and personal.

Lyrical lines like “I leave the TV on to feel a part of something” and “I’m one in the same, both the slave and the chain” appear to have been carefully crafted in order to deeply resonate with all listeners, but especially those struggling through the process of grief. And it’s Lovell’s emotionally-charged, yet down-to-earth delivery that wraps the entire contents of “Lion’s Den“ in a nice, melancholic bow.
