Hazlett - “doing my best”
Ahead of his North American tour, the Australian-born, Sweden-based singer-songwriter known as Hazlett returns to the blog with “doing my best.”
We have never tried to hide our love for Hazlett, and being that this is the tenth time he’s appeared on our site, we do not ever see that changing. With “doing my best,” he delivers more of his fascinating, folksy craft, beginning with a ghostly slide guitar that soars across the top of a raw acoustic guitar performance. The mood is raw and intimate and we fell in love with this track as soon as we pressed the play button.
Of course, it would not be a Hazlett tune without his signature, multilayered vocal delivery, which never ceases to completely blow our minds– it always amazes us that his lyrics are delivered to our ears in multiple textures, yet his music still sounds just as intimate as a private concert being held in one’s living room. All of this changes for the refrain, which is marked by an elevation with the arrival a rich, analogue-infused rhythm section.
The dynamic fluctuation between verse and chorus allows “doing my best” to hit listeners with a delicious serving of ebb and flow. And to make even more of an impact, Hazlett removes elements from time to time, letting the aux vocal layers take center stage, which will only leave the listener coming back for more. If you’re in North America, you should do whatever you can to hear this one live on stage.
