Brock Geiger - “Early August Rain”

Canadian singer-songwriter Brock Geiger returns to the blog with the slow burning alt-rock track, “Early August Rain.”

Produced at the famed Sound City Studios by Geiger and Grammy Award-winning Will Maclellan (Phoebe Bridgers, Boygenius), “Early August Rain” is a track where experimental texture takes centre stage. Over a slow, off kilter rhythmic percussive groove the composition is dressed in a patchwork of lush layers of sustained piano, wild guitar tones that vividly swell, string plucks and ambient padding which is reverbed into a milky cloud of gorgeous mystery. The music intensely beautiful, meditative, yet there is so much restraint.

Brock Geiger gives a wonderfully clear, half sung, half spoken vocal performance across the track. The delivery feels as if Geiger is revealing a truth, a wisdom that is inevitable yet very deep. The detachment carries a sense of acceptance and peace which brings a real weight to the lyrics.

Geiger adds that “Early August Rain was written while I was watching parts of my personal world go up in flames while simultaneously witnessing the wildfires in Canada last summer. This song became an outlet for practicing acceptance in the face of things beyond my control, evolving into a personal anthem of resilience. The title is quite literal, but thematically, I was drawn to the relationship between the natural world, and how we navigate our own storms.”

Early August Rain” is an intriguing track that demands a deep listen. It rewards with each play as the layers unfurl and immerse you in luxurious subtly.
