Dillon Havins - “Hollow Islands”
From Austin, Texas, singer-songwriter Dillon Havins arrives on our blog with the delicately lo-fi and indie folk sounds of “Hollow Islands.”
The track was written during a snowstorm and enters the ears in much the same manner as songs from Bon Iver’s For Emma… era, but the difference here is that Havins utilizes a barebones, seemingly vintage drum machine. The entirety of “Hollow Islands” is built upon a constantly looping rhythm; however the consistent emergence of additional ethereal layers keeps listeners fully engaged.
In addition to its extremely raw and intimate nature, “Hollow Islands” nails our niche for a multitracked vocal performance, again reminiscent of early Bon Iver, or even certain selections from Elliott Smith, including a strong, dreamy double, as well as wonderfully textured auxiliary layers. The lyrics are brief and the verses mirror each other as though additional refrains, but it is extremely difficult not to lose yourself within this gem of a song.
We hope that you can find the two minutes and forty-five seconds required to consume this lovely tune and we hope that “Hollow Islands” is only the first of many songs that Dillon Havins sends our way. The track is now available everywhere.
