South Carolina-born singer-songwriter Alex Rogers hits the ground running with his debut single, “Understanding.”
For those of us who have ever had to bid farewell to a love affair, “Understanding” is based on the premise of looking back through a lens of regret, whether due to one’s actions or inactions. And while this subject matter is bound to open up some old wounds for a number of listeners, just wait until you hear it.
“Understanding” borrows a great deal of its sound from the 1970s, at times entering the ears as though a nostalgic time capsule. Whether it’s the warbling keys atop the acoustically driven backbone, or the deep bass notes supporting the sweet licks from the lead guitar, you are definitely going to find something to cherish within this tune.
That said, it is, of course, Rogers’ vocal performance that sets “Understanding” ablaze. The gods of music have blessed him with a voice that is reminiscent of artists such as Marcus King and Teddy Swims, not only hitting the notes, but causing his listeners to feel them completely. This is most evident on the refrain, when the subtle aux layers fall into place, adding a delicious sense of width to the sonic landscape.
For the most part, the song resides outside our usual, lo-fi and stripped-back niche, but once we heard it, we knew “Understanding” deserved a space on our site. If you are trying to make an impactful debut, you might as well blast it from a vintage-tinged cannon of heartache– that is what you’re going to get when you press that play button.
