From Verona, Italy, indie pop artist Giorgia Piva, aka georgia, georgia, has just released “things you do,” a rather upbeat trek through emotional abuse.
As dark as the inspiration for the song might be, there is certainly no denying its enthusiastic energy, as will be immediately obvious once you’ve pressed the play button. “things you do” bursts to life from the onset, complete with a full-band production that begs its listeners to let loose their inhibitions and hit the dance floor, whether at the club or simply in the privacy of one’s home.
“things you do” is dressed in jangly guitars and a modern touch of pop-rock energy that is warmly reminiscent of boygenius, with a refrain that is, without a doubt, ready for mainstream radio. Piva has wonderfully layered the entire tune with multiple textures of vocals, be they backing, doubling, or harmonizing, which, again, allows the catchy melody to perfectly disguise the pain behind the lyrical content.
It is so often that we allow the emotional agony of our pasts to color our art, but “things you do” enters the ears as though a vibrant celebration. georgia, georgia has taken this idea and ran with it, allowing her music to be the exemplar of success being the ultimate form of revenge– in this case, it is obviously her happiness, which has made for one hell of a memorable pop song.
About the song, Piva adds: “‘things you do’ is about the first relationship that truly left a mark on me. I was 18 and in love with my best friend, but he was ashamed to be with me. He belittled me and called me names.I kept all of this a secret for years, trapped by the shame of what I was accepting, and by the disbelief at this side of him I never knew existed. I was blinded by love, because I couldn’t believe he truly meant everything he was saying to me… But I refuse to stay silent any longer. Protecting people like him, who feel entitled to abuse others, doesn’t sit right with me. Words are a form violence too.”
