Charlotte OC - “God, We Tried”
Singer-songwriter Charlotte OC from Blackburn, United Kingdom, has just released the spell binding R&B-tinged indie pop track, “God, We Tried.”
“God, We Tried” is one of those songs that simply stops you in your tracks as soon as you hear it. It feels like it has always existed, holding one hell of a melody. It feels instantly familiar. Slow burning and drenched in soul the track is built round a syncopated electronic drum groove.
Organic percussive layers on top allow the track’s beat to be wonderfully immersive, much in the same way as Nelly Furtado’s “Say It Right.” With just the odd touch of acoustic guitar and some delicious alt pop toned synths, the music is intoxicating.
But in truth it is the majestic vocal of Charlotte OC that steels the show. The emotive, soulful and heartfelt performance permeates a classic vintage hue across the track. In short it is a flawless performance that gives Amy Winehouse a run for her money. Simply mesmerising.
On the track, Charlotte OC adds: “This song is deeply personal to me; I started writing it after my dad passed away. In my grief, I ended up in a relationship that probably wasn’t the healthiest choice for me, and I wasn’t truly allowing myself to heal. If I think about it, all I wanted was a male figure in my life, to fill a void.”
Timeless, hauntingly beautiful, “God, We Tried,” released via Embassy of Music, is a tantalising glimpse of Charlotte OC’s forthcoming EP that is due for release this summer.
