Charlie Bishop - “Dot in California”
From the Golden State, singer-songwriter Charlie Bishop has just released the dark and raw sounds of “Dot in California.”
We’ve long been fans of Bishop’s gritty and lo-fi recordings, and, much to our delight, “Dot in California” brings more of the same. Brought to life by the straight-forward strums of acoustic guitar, this track is bound to earn your attention as soon as you press that play button.
It does not take long for Bishop’s vocal performance to emerge, warmly reminiscent of John Vincent III, with a subtle nod to the late, great Johnny Cash. Additionally, and a reason we always look forward to Bishop’s releases, there is the dusty vibe of Gregory Alan Isakov, which we can never resist.
As the track progresses, the sporadic notes of piano and soft swells of ghostly lead guitar find their place in the arrangement, with a barebones rhythm deployed, bringing a pulse and some forward momentum to the tune. In lieu of a refrain, Bishop takes advantages of otherworldly “oh” vocals, which we wish more artists would utilize.
By the final third, “Dot in California” adopts more of a full-band production, though never abandoning its soft and intimate nature. We have not been able to stop listening the song since he sent it over to us, and we’re quite certain you’ll do the same once you get it into your ears.
