Brock Geiger - “After Later”
Brock Geiger from Canada has just released the meditative indie folk track, “After Later.”
Brock Geiger has most likely drawn inspiration from legendary records like Pet Sounds and Scott Walker 2, but I would also compare the track to the early solo work of Paul McCartney. Feeling almost like a gentle, wistful antidote to the busy world we often get swept up in, the delicate, ambient soundscape is a reminder that not all masterpieces need to be plush with grandiose production.
Founded around the mellow tones of acoustic guitar that feel like the warm rays coming in through the window, the music floats with a sense of bittersweet nostalgia. Fleshing out the tune’s beautiful simplicity are touches of melodic upright bass, haunting embellishments of ambient swells, and the hypnotic march of shakers.
Vocally, Brock Geiger delivers a very understated performance. Quiet, personal, and imbued with memories, the performance is one you would imagine Geiger singing alone in a room.
On the track the artist adds: “After Later is about the nonlinear nature of understanding ourselves and our experiences. There’s this sense of seeing the doorway to an ending so clearly but still walking further into the maze—clinging to things that might never have been tangible in the first place. The title itself is this playful, nonsensical combination of words that, for me, evokes a kind of suspension in time—a feeling of being stuck in a vague future that you can’t quite pin down.”
“After Later” is a delightful slice of bittersweet perfection. The track is taken from the forthcoming album, Some Nights, slated for release on March 18th.
