Avery Friedman - “New Thing”
Brooklyn-based artist Avery Friedman returns to the blog with the sublimely melancholic indie rock track, “New Thing.”
“New Thing” is a slow burning tune that navigates the feelings of anxiety and disorientation. Buoyed by irresistible layers of shimmering, rolling guitar work that make the composition feel both intimate and vividly expansive, it is a song you could happily play on repeat. With a steady drum beat and warm bass you can only come to the conclusion you are listening to something achingly beautiful, almost suspended in time.
Avery Friedman infuses a haunting, dreamlike vulnerability with her smooth, breathy vocal. Detached but with a weightless aura the performance doesn’t grandstand or demand your attention but it is undeniable that it lingers with you.
On the track Avery Friedman adds: “I wrote New Thing in one sitting after riding the subway home alone at night for the first time since being mugged at knifepoint months prior. I was shocked and disoriented by the anxiety I experienced doing something so routine—I felt foreign to myself. It’s one of the first of my songs that I truly loved, which is part of why I chose it as the title of my upcoming record. I’m grateful for how this song continues to bring me back into my body.”
“New Thing” is the last teaser and also the title song of Avery Friedman’s debut album slated for April 18th via Audio Antihero. Vinyl and cassette formats of this record will also be issued, so make sure that you snap up your own copy of what is promising to be a spectacular release.
