Zoé Watson - “Little Miss”

Channelling the spirits of Billie Holiday and Joni Mitchell, England-based singer-songwriter Zoé Watson has just released the neo-soul sounds of “Little Miss.”

It is not often that we dip our toes into this genre, but once the rolling sounds from the Rhodes piano emerged above a deliciously lo-fi beat, we had no choice but to feature “Little Miss” on the blog. The overall vibe is extremely gentle, perfect for some Friday morning introspection, no matter where you might find yourself.

And if these heavily tones were not enough to win you over, just wait until you catch an earful of Watson’s vocal performance, which is layered in such a wonderfully vintage veneer that we have not been able to stop listening to the track. Layers of aux vocals find their position as the rhythm section thickens, imbuing the production with a flavorful, 1970s warmth.

We would be remiss not to mention how much this record is, at times, reminiscent of Fiona Apple, who just so happens to be one of our all-time favorite singer-songwriters– it has that smokey, melancholic jazz character that we find truly tantalizing. “Little Miss” is the opening cut from Watson’s new EP, Like I Can, which is now available everywhere:
