Wolfschmidt - “Clever”
Wolfschmidt, from Gothenburg in Sweden, have just released “Clever,” a catchy, psychedelic rock track that showcases creativity, but also a good understanding of classic “pop.” The riffing guitars that start the song immediately grab the listener’s attention, with one constant and pulsing and the other reverberated and adding a feeling of glitter– you know it’s going to be good.
The sweet and soaring vocals add a nice contrast to the instrumentation. The vocal earcandy used to fill the spaces in the mix is a nice touch. The swaggering beat then kicks in, giving off a relentless pulse and works perfectly with the fuzzy bass. The song has a nice drive. The guitar riffing on the high notes makes me think of the band The Bees. The end break, with distorted guitars and vocals, adds a nice, psychedelic feel to the song, pulling it firmly away from classic pop, especially as the sounds become more and more destroyed.
Overall, “Clever” is a well-crafted and enjoyable track. I am looking forward to seeing what else they can pull out of the bag. Wolfschmidt describe the song as depicting “a two-faceted relationship to oneself where you're constantly outsmarted by a murderous ego.”
