Waldo Witt - “Melodies in the Ocean”
Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter John Waldo Wittenmyer, aka Waldo Witt, returns to the blog with “Melodies in the Ocean,” a track that encourages listeners to let go.
This psychedelically-tinged morsel of lo-fi rock has a plethora of delightful sounds available for all connoisseurs of musical genres. Straight out of the gate, we are picking up a trippy melding of Stevie Wonder and Paul McCartney, complete with an energetic rhythm, layers of effected guitars, and seemingly endless textures of keys.
This early-1970s motif carries over into Wittenmyer’s vocal performance as well, which is imbued with the tried-and-trusted modern psych rock formula of reverbs and delays, akin to the work of Unknown Mortal Orchestra and Mild High Club. On the refrain, a harmony layer falls into place, providing a substantial sense of both width and elevation.
“Melodies in the Ocean” is full of dynamic twists and turns, ranging from catchy guitar licks, ear-worm synth hooks, and divine moments of Wittenmeyer’s falsetto. It is a cosmically-charged journey through the idea of throwing everything you own into the sea as a means of discovering who you actually are.
And if you are the kind of person who prefers to experience a song, instead of simply listening to one, we highly recommend pressing play on “Melodies in the Ocean.”
