Louis Cormack - “Dig It Up”
Aberdeen-born, Cork-based singer-songwriter Louis Cormack arrives on our blog with the dark and folksy sounds of “Dig It Up.”
The track gets listeners started with some wonderfully finger-plucked acoustic guitar. The vibe is lo-fi and intimate, instantly inviting us into Cormack’s sonic world. On the outer edges of the arrangement, the subtle sounds of an electric piano dance around the acoustic foundation, providing a sense of variation and width to the otherwise stripped-back production.
Cormack’s vocal arrives, just as raw as the rest of the track, allowing music lovers to embark on this vulnerable journey. On the refrain, an additional layer of vocals arrives, adding a substantial amount of width to the performance. This harmony remains for the second verse, allowing “Dig It Up” to begin its climb as it naturally crescendos.
Wonderfully placed moments of electric guitar have been utilized to ensure that we receive our fair share of ear candy. Some bass emerges along the way as well, anchoring the arrangement with a weighty foundation. And even as all of these elements serve to populate the soundscape, “Dig It Up” never abandons the initial intimacy of its course.
“Dig It Up” comes from Cormack’s forthcoming LP, and he adds that it was written “during an online songwriting course I was taking hosted by Buck Meek (Big Thief). It was inspired by a dead buzzard I came across in a river… It’s a bit of a doom and gloom song about our disconnected relationship with the natural world.”
