Under The Rug - “mad girl’s love song”

Austin, TX-based Under The Rug have returned to us with “mad girl’s love song,” a track that was inspired by the work of Sylvia Plath.

For those of you who are not familiar with Under The Rug’s sound, we highly encourage you to step inside of their dark and gritty sonic realm. “mad girl’s love song” does not waste anyone’s time, promptly revealing the vocal performance at the press of the play button. The voice of Casey Dayan brings a sense of mellifluous urgency to the song, with hints of the alienation and delusion found in Plath’s writing.

And while the subject matter deeply resonates with us, the production is magnificent, particularly in the vocal department, as wondrous aux layers descend upon the arrangement. “mad girl’s love song” ebbs and flows, breathing with dynamic flux– one minute, it is filling your ears with gritty guitar chords, then peeling away layers to reveal a mandolin solo in the next. The song firmly plants its feet in multiple genres and shall truly captivate anyone within earshot.

Although inspired by Plath, “mad girl’s love song” does not adhere to the structure of her poetry, as Dayan adds: “In our song, things had to move differently. The speaker is more concerned with the dissonance between who they are and how the expectations the ‘you’ might have of THEM. It feels true to me, as a trans person, who is often being interpreted on the internet.”

mad girl’s love song” arrives ahead of Under The Rug’s fourth studio album, happiness is easy, comprised of thirty songs and due for an early Fall release, just in time for their tour.
