Lucy Daydream, Cali Wilson, & Blushing
Don’t even get us started on all the ways that technology will ultimately be the downfall of humanity, especially when it comes to social media; however, if not for TikTok and the constant stream of indie artists that appear on our FYP, we would have chucked our phones into the River Styx.
We would first like to pay tribute to Lucy Daydream who recently released an album entitled Dream Machine. This indie band from Denver, CO would have flown beneath our radar if we hadn’t caught a TikTok in which they covered The Cure’s “Love Song.” After some digging around, it turns out that this rendition is a couple years old, but it also brought into our lives the new record, which opens with “Drippy,” a track that definitely has the same vibe as the previously mentioned cover, which is really a glimpse into the band’s overall wondrous appeal. And speaking of covers, Dream Machine contains one of the most delightfully haunting versions of Nina Simone’s “Feeling Good” that we have ever heard/will ever hear again in our entire lives. If you listen to only one song today, let it be this one, after which you will promptly deep dive into everything Lucy Daydream have ever created:
Although we primarily use TikTok for all the doggo videos and conspiracy theories, there is nothing like catching acoustical glimpses into the lives of singer-songwriters. This is where we found Cali Wilson and her raw interpretations of songs that, apparently, have not even been recorded and released yet. This is our first attempt at trying to link to a TikTok video. If it doesn’t work, hopefully this will light some sort of small fire that will get this woman to book some studio time– pronto! In the meantime, you can peruse her past releases everywhere. A good place to start would be “New Colors:”
Lastly, we have the shoegaze quartet from Austin, TX known as Blushing. While they seem to be doing reasonably well with their streaming numbers, we would still like to give them a gracious nod for “How It Ends,” which also appeared on our FYP alongside a tour announcement (also available on their website). The cool thing about “How It Ends” is that it’s the last track on their 2022 LP Possessions, which is already available everywhere, so you should listen to the entire thing before finally arriving at this finish line of a banger. And behold! The power of social media has also informed us that their 2023 record, Tether/Weak is on its way, with a number of tracks already available for your listening pleasure. The record officially drops on February 10. Check out “Tether,” which already sounds larger than life:
