Tommy Ashby - “Coastguard”
Our favorite Scottish songsmith Tommy Ashby has just revealed the wondrously folksy sounds of “Coastguard.”
“Coastguard” is the tenth track of Ashby’s that we’ve featured on our blog and, once you’ve heard it, you’ll understand why we can never say no to his music. The song begins with the gentle strums of acoustic guitar across the top of some subtle ambient padding. The vibe is instantly melancholic, nestling itself right within our indie folk wheelhouse.
Ashby utilizes his upper register to deliver a dreamy and emotionally-charged lyrical experience, traversing the lengths that people will go in order to chase their dreams. Flourishes of lead guitar and some splendid layers of vocals start to populate the arrangement just before a barebones rhythm emerges, propelling “Coastguard” to the depths of your spirit.
Synthy textures of strings fill out the remaining spaces of the soundscape, but the star of this folk performance is, of course, Ashby’s voice, which always finds a way to sit within the sounds of mainstream, yet also hold a tight grasp on originality. There is never any doubt that it is Tommy Ashby song and one day you’ll be able to tell your friends that you knew about him before he rose to international stardom.
Speaking about “Coastguard,” Ashby adds: “This song describes the fear of you losing to the ones you love. The powerlessness we feel against random luck that life throws at us. It also describes someone who spent their life chasing dreams and is left wondering why.”
Song after song, Tommy Ashby always manages to write the kind of music that deeply resonates with his listeners. “Coastguard” is a sonic experience that you truly do not want to miss and we hope that you will join us in spinning it on a constant loop. The track is now available everywhere via Dance to the Radio.
