Tobias Arbo - “Spacecraft”

Sweden-based Tobias Arbo returns to us with “Spacecraft,” an emotionally-charged journey through the vastness of loss.

Over the course of our blog’s lifetime, Arbo has been a steady fixture within our existence. Time and time again, he has won us over with his honest and heartfelt songwriting and “Spacecraft” is another fantastic example of his skill. The track opens with the soft, melancholic notes from a piano, eventually making way for Arbo’s gentle and soothing vocal performance.

The lyrics traverse the agony within every little detail of losing someone close to you, the thoughts that are magnified as you try to regain some semblance of equilibrium. On the refrain, a soft harmony emerges, bringing a bit of a hopeful width to the sparseness of the production. And as the song begins to crescendo upon the arrival of Arbo’s falsetto, the listener cannot help but want to lend a hand in constructing his escape.

Some electronically-driven percussive elements appear, offering support for the bass and guitar that make their way to the surface. It is at this point in “Spacecraft” that the vocal turns to a dreamy, double-tracked method of delivery, with supporting layers drifting in and out of the arrangement. Careful listeners will catch the references to the film, Cast Away, though one does not need to be overly familiar with the film in order to fully appreciate the raw vulnerability on display here.

Arbo adds that “Spacecraft” is “about feeling how gravity leaves you when someone closest to you suddenly disappears. How your mind keeps looping all those future memories you were going to have over and over, and how draining it is to try to say goodbye to them.”

For those of you who have ever wanted to escape the emptiness of losing someone, we are confident that “Spacecraft” will deeply resonate with you.
