april june - “starstruck”
Madrid, Spain-based dream-pop artist april june arrives on the blog with the vibrantly chill sounds of “starstruck.”
The track opens to the buoyant tones of a piano-driven arrangement, strewn across the top of a moderately paced beat. The result is a sound that will have you swaying in complete jubilation, tapping your feet to its gentle rhythmic nature.
But where “starstruck” has completely won our attention is with april june’s vocal performance. Her voice enters the sonic landscape like a dream, delicately delivering lines of lyrics inspired by the 1993 film, True Romance, which adds a pop culture cherry atop this already enchanting musical number.
Additional layers of vocals drift in and out of the production, adding to its already shoegaze-tinged dreamscape. And while these auxiliary textures are a highlight, we would be remiss not to mention the warbling tape-effected guitar notes that imbue the arrangement with a prolific sense of humanness.
This is the first we’re hearing from april june, but we can assure you that it will not be the last time she appears on our page. “starstruck” arrives ahead of april june’s EP, baby’s out of luck again, due for release on August 2 via Nettwerk.
