They Owe Us - “Mindfulness Mañana”

From Sweden, They Owe Us have just released the vibrant indie pop-rock track, “Mindfulness Mañana.”

You can hear tinges of the marijuana-baked Beach Boys in the reverberating percussive elements, the full-bodied, doo-wop-esque bass, and the layers of vocal harmonies that fill the sparser verses. The vocals never reach the wall-of-sound tiers of good old Brian Wilson, but instead take on a mid-range character, imbuing a more Beck-like nonchalance.

As the song settles into its groove, the production channels a modern atmospheric vibe reminiscent of Dave Sitek on Beady Eye’s BE, especially with the driving, assertive mid-tempo drum groove and slightly dissonant synth pad. At the same time there’s also the organic polish of George Chkiantz on Family’s Fearless with the melodic, warm piano and Bill Wyman-esque bass. They Owe Us caps off this head-bopping track with a fizzy guitar solo.

This musically dazzling, joyful, and sophisticated track is described by They Owe Us as “A pleasant drunken party where The Rolling Stones, Tame Impala and The Beach Boys share the last Singapore Sling. While listening to a random person who compulsively talks about nothing. In a braid with Swing of Sweden, a bar piano and a choir-compass with quicksilver issues.”

Tight, catchy, and memorable, “Mindfulness Mañana” is an extremely interesting and entertaining listen that is brimmed full of enjoyable textural experimentation, yet never pushes into the esoteric realms of the unhinged and abstract. The song is taken from the forthcoming album, All on RED, slated for release April 12th via Exquisite Feline.
