The One Eighties - “Backseat Devil”

From Raleigh, North Carolina, indie duo Autumn Brand and Daniel Cook, aka The One Eighties, are back on the airwaves with “Backseat Devil.”

Since the release of their 2023 LP, Minefields, the duo have returned to a more stripped-back and folksy niche, allowing “Backseat Devil” to occupy more of an intimate domain. Slowly fading in with the ethereal and ghostly tones of pedal steel, the track soon makes way for Brand’s authentic and heartfelt vocal performance. Layers of guitar soar across the top of a vintage-hued rhythm section, with multiple layers of aux vocals complimenting Brand’s main delivery.

And while “Backseat Devil” resides quite comfortably within the realm of indie folk, the textures provided by the pedal steel and swelling string arrangement enable it to move freely within a dreamlike sonic space. The resulting sound is one that will allow the listener to fully lose themselves, which is perfect for any road trip or the essential bout of introspection.

For this track, The One Eighties enlisted the help of award-winning drummer Fred Eltringham (Sheryl Crow, Kacey Musgraves, Carrie Underwood), pedal steel player Whit Wright (American Aquarium, Thomas Rhett Akins), bassists Bill Corbin (American Aquarium) and Casey Toll, Charles Cleaver on organ and accordion, and Maigan Kennedy on soprano harmonies and cello.
