Slow Coast - “Words That They Told”

Matt Lawton did not need to tell us that he was from California– as soon as you press play on “Words That They Told,” it is quite obvious that the song was crafted on the west coast. Lawton creates sun-drenched indie pop in his bedroom, bringing them to your ears via his project: Slow Coast.

After a quick fade-in, “Words That They Told” gets things started with a lo-fi beat and Lawton’s vocal, exquisitely delivering a performance that is supremely chill. Out of the gate, the sound is reminiscent of many acclaimed artists, such as Foster the People, The Strokes, and Dayglow– all lovers of music will find something here that totally resonates.

Glued to the beat is a pretty sweet bass line that melodically churns beneath layers of effected guitar parts. And the dynamic shift that elevates the refrain is bound to have you singing along before the song ends. Throughout the track’s course, the warm glow of tube saturation clings to the vocals, imbuing the sonic landscape with a savory analog charm.

Some major highlights include the occasional dynamic break, as Lawton peels away layers from the arrangement, leaving the effected rhythmic skeletal structure of the song on display. And while we are not much for flashy guitar solos, there’s something truly magical occurring here as the notes appear to take on a synthy shape that is quite captivating.

We imagine that “Words That They Told” will become the soundtrack to a great deal of the memories you end up making this summer. If you happen to be in the market for an upbeat tune that will comfortably fit into all of your beachy playlists, you really need to press that play button.
