Bad Flamingo - “Hole”

Ladies and gentlefolk, the mysteriously fantastic duo Bad Flamingo once again grace the pages of our blog with their sonic sorcery via the new single, “Hole.”

The song opens with the warbling tones of an acoustic guitar, kicking up a bit of dust across Bad Flamingo’s signature wild-western sonic landscape. Time is measured in the subtle increments provided by a tambourine, setting a dark and gritty scene for “Hole” to unfold.

It is not long before the vocal arrives, as raw and seductive as always, breathing an emotional life into the track. Bass is provided by a fuzzy layer of synth, which sets “Hole” apart from Bad Flamingo’s usual brand of indie, while still allowing the arrangement to maintain the duo’s trademarked sound.

Hole” continues the motif that we’ve all come to know and love from Bad Flamingo, transporting the listener to time when outlaws ran amok and everyone lived and died by the six-shooter. Here, this idea is cemented with the refrain: “I can’t save my soul, but I can dig my own hole.”

Climbing into its crescendo, “Hole” picks up a few passengers, including some percussive elements, an exquisite harmonica performance, and layers of auxiliary vocals. Each of these sounds have been righteously panned and effected to give the production a satisfying cinematic width.

Hole” is an experimental masterpiece, complete with wondrously placed vocal harmonies and some ghostly moments of slide guitar. Once you get it into your ears, you will understand why we’ve featured every tune that Bad Flamingo have sent our way.
