SELETT - “Hey Hey”
New York City-based singer-songwriter SELETT once again appears on our blog with the extravagantly lo-fi brilliance of her new tune, “Hey Hey.”
The distant churning of an organ gets things started, followed shortly by the sounds of provisional percussive elements, including a shaker and the occasional bells of cymbals, as well as the deep reverberation of a raw floor tom. The sounds meld together, breathing as a single organic musical force and we are immediately glad that we pressed the play button.
The arrival of a slightly overdriven bass line prompts SELETT’s vocal performance and, all at once, we are reminded of why we became enchanted by her music in the first place. Her voice has a faint Neko Case way about it, displaying every syllable as though a gift from the gods and/ or goddesses of music. And, of course, we have no choice but to believe each word that she breathes.
As “Hey Hey” progresses, it takes on more of a straightforward arrangement; the beat becomes fully fleshed, bound tightly to the warmth of the bass and our ears are greeted by some lovely layers of guitar and piano. The whole listening experience is quite dreamlike and ethereal, polished in a thick coating of reverb, deeply resonating with your spirit as it enters your ears.
If you make time for anything today, please let it be the two minutes and forty-five seconds it will take for SELETT’s “Hey Hey” to consume you.
