Sarah Johnsone - “Selfish Mind”

UK-based Sarah Johnsone is here and she’s brought her entire band to ensure that “Selfish Mind” hits you in all of the appropriate places.

This tune begins with some delightfully played guitar notes of the lo-fi jazz variety, yet remaining indie enough to hold all the cats at bay. A bass guitar makes its presence known as we are swept into the avant-garde universe of Johnsone. And with a quick fill from the drums, “Selfish Mind” bursts to life.

Upon the arrival of Johnsone’s vocals, the track further explores its jazz motif, as she possesses the ability to display a sort of Amy Winehouse vibe, and we are completely here for it. With a few key backing vocals placed in just the right spots, it will not be long before your feet are tappin’ and your head is boppin’.

On the hook, “Selfish Mind” utilizes a staccato rhythm with a noteworthy uptick in tempo, even going so far as incorporating some scat vocals, which bring the song some timeless charm and, for us, the instant need to experience it on stage. The end of the chorus marks a moment for some vibey keys to shine, which splendidly saturate the soundscape.

In just over a two-minute runtime, “Selfish Mind” manages to showcase a plethora of talent and craft from Johnsone and co., which will, no doubt, have you returning to it again and again. This track comes from the upcoming EP, Same Reflection But I’m Changed, due for release on November 10.

Johnsone explains, “‘Selfish Mind’ is about falling out of love, and lacking the sincerity to admit it. The flow of the full piece is concurrent with the passing of time. It starts in a tender, warm fashion, and ends in a messy explosion, like many relationships.”
