Riley Pearce - “Losing Light”

Perth, Australia-based singer-songwriter Riley Pearce has just sent over the wonderfully folksy sounds of “Losing Light,” a standout single from his brand new LP, It’s Your Turn Now.

The lo-fi sounds of an acoustic guitar get this tune started, soon joined by a remarkable expansion of the arrangement that includes some rich notes from a bass and some melodic, ambient tones from a vibey keyboard. Sparse percussive elements also make their presence known, but hold back while Pearce embarks on his lyrical journey.

The arrival of Pearce’s vocal performance nails “Losing Light” directly to our niche, revealing a dark and smooth tenor that is slightly akin to that of Gregory Alan Isakov, who just so happens to be one of our all-time favorites. And while the track has a great deal of commercial appeal, it never loses sight of its folksy foundation, which is what secures its intimate nature, allowing us to believe every single line of lyrics.

As the song progresses, our ears are filled with multiple layers of vocals, providing a profound sense of dynamic dimension to the sonic landscape. The subject matter is quite positive and uplifting– “Losing Light” is the kind of song you play for the people who are closest to you, letting them know that you’re forever in their corner to offer encouragement and support.

Losing Light” marks the third occasion that Pearce has been featured on our blog, and a simple press of the play button will show you the reason for that. In a world that has been seemingly overrun by commercial production tactics, Pearce holds fast to his raw and authentic folk origins, and if you are unfamiliar with his sound, this track is the perfect place to start.
