Proper Youth - “Modern Cowboy”
Brooklyn, New York-based Proper Youth return to us with a new single: “Modern Cowboy.”
The track begins with the distant flourishes of synth, gradually fading in with a savory ambience. The reverberating notes of a guitar arrive amidst the tapping of a hi-hat and, soon, “Modern Cowboy” is brought to life by the entire band, including a driving rhythm section and the luscious texture from a saxophone. The vibe is quite dark, just the way we like it, with a tinge of Americana coursing though its indie-rocking veins.
The reason we have found ourselves drawn to the sounds of Proper Youth has much to do with singer Adam Barito’s vocal performance. His voice maintains a modern character, akin to The National or Arcade Fire, and utilizes a raw delivery that predominantly resides within his lower register. This imbues “Modern Cowboy” with a distinctly vintage flavor that avoids pandering to tactics such as autotune.
The song is a colorful palette of vivid textures– from the marvelous keys to the shimmering guitars, it is very easy for listeners to lose themselves inside of this mellifluous dreamscape. The wonderfully placed vocal harmonies from Amy Nesky perfectly send “Modern Cowboy” over the top, with a satisfying sense of sonic depth and detail.
