BATTS - “Sell You The Sun”
Melbourne-based singer-songwriter Tanya Batt, aka BATTS, arrives on our blog with her new single, “Sell You The Sun.”
The song begins with one of the most delightful guitar hooks that we’ve heard all year. Placed atop a lo-fi beat, this thing will dig its claws right into you until it’s the only thing you can think about. BATTS’ vocal shortly arrives, wonderfully tinged with a vintage fervor that infuses an infectiously upbeat sense of positivity.
Once the production shifts to include a full-band arrangement, “Sell You The Sun” takes on a vibe that is akin to The Beatles. BATTS’ voice is warmly reminiscent of Angel Olsen and Sharon Van Etten (one of our all-time faves), which makes sense, considering she has toured with the latter and even collaborated with her on BATTS’ last LP.
Once the chorus has become a permanent ear worm, BATTS has taken the liberty of composing the most extraordinarily prolific middle eight. The rhythm suddenly shifts to a bouncing, piano-driven sonic landscape, with a truly glorious display of layered, harmonizing vocals. This section effectively spoon-feeds the song to its listener, offering a late-1960s flair that we wish more artists would utilize.
And for you guitar solo fiends, you too shall receive your dose of ear candy, with a lead that allows the listener to envision “Sell You The Sun” as a theatrical production. The song is equal parts indie rock and Americana, with prolific moments of folksy pop and straight-up psychedelia. No matter who you are or where you’re from, you are seriously going to love this one.
About the track, BATTS adds: “Sell You The Sun is another way of saying “Kill them with kindness.” I wrote it whilst reading Jeff Tweedy's book How to Write One Song. I sat down in the morning to do his “word ladder exercise” and my favourite phrases I'd put together that morning were - Greet & Elephant, Sell & Sun and Change & Hurricanes. I moved to my piano and wrote this song very quickly. It's very much so inspired by The Beatles and I finally got to create the middle 8 section I've always wanted.”
