P!lot - “Or Lack Thereof”
From Charleston, South Carolina, P!lot has just released the retro-tinged indie rock track, “Or Lack Thereof.”
This song exudes a strong 1970s vibe, evoking comparisons of tracks from New York City’s legendary underground music scene, like Lou Reed and tracks such as “Vicious.” The guitars truly embody this classic vibe with their chugging chords, shaping the pulsating, slick momentum of the track. They harmonise and flow, creating a lush textural richness. While the guitar playing primarily consists of simple chords, the amount of melodic interest they create as the sounds overlap is truly special.
The drums shift effortlessly from one lush, hypnotic pattern to another creating a delightful sense of ebb and flow. Transitioning from staggered grooves to more syncopated, danceable also are reminiscent of this 1970s New York scene this time making me think of Blondie or what Bowie was copying. Meanwhile, the bass provides a sturdy foundation, enhancing the drive and groove of the drums with its thick, slightly fuzzy texture.
The vocal of P!lot is delivered with a great sense of nonchalant authenticity. The narrative-like style is cool, honest, and wonderfully understated as it delivers the observant and acerbic lyrics.
About “Or Lack Thereof,” P!lot adds: “Tired of being treated like a fan girl in the NYC indie scene, I penned this song back in 2016 as a playful jab at the male-dominated culture that often overlooked my own artistry. Inspired by Courtney Barnett’s guitar riffs in “Depreston“ and the apathetic vibe of Daria’s theme song, I crafted a tune that captured my own frustration and humour.”
“Or Lack Thereof” is a really great track that feels as if it has come straight off a vinyl from the 1970s. This track would make the perfect addition to any music lover’s playlist. Connect with P!lot: Instagram | Spotify | Facebook
