Cat Rose Smith - “Nowhere”
London-based singer songwriter Cat Rose Smith has just released the alt country track “Nowhere.”
“Nowhere” is built on a steady, relaxed tempo, rustic drum groove that perfectly complements the storytelling cadence of the lyrics. This pleasingly brings to the fore the intricate beauty of the other musical elements. Touches of lap steel guitar swell atmospherically, adding rich, mellow, twangy sounds. Rootsy acoustic guitars lightly fill out the rhythmic groove, providing a warm and slightly gritty texture.
Nostalgic licks shimmer to the surface, offering hints of ear candy while enhancing the track’s emotional depth. The final touches come from the timeless, soulful tones of the violin, the warm, pulsing bass, and a short, expressive electric guitar solo. The music brings to mind acts like Kacey Musgraves or a more polished version of Gillian Welch.
The real highlight of the song is undeniably the beautiful and authentic vocals of Cat Rose Smith. Her performance is imbued with a pure and clear tone that expressively weaves through the song. Filled with lush, nuanced phrasing and supported by rich harmonising backing vocals, you cannot help but get lost in the performance.
Cat Rose Smith adds: “Funnily enough, ‘Nowhere’ was in large part inspired by the video game Red Dead Redemption 2. The game is set during the dwindling days of the gunslingers amid stunning Western backdrops, with a rich and emotional story that addresses themes of honour, belonging, and the natural world. I was drawn in by both the atmosphere and story, and as a result ended up writing a little Western saga of my own in ‘Nowhere’.”
“Nowhere” is an irresistible tapestry of captivating textures and warm, emotive vocals. We suggest getting it into your ears as soon as humanly possible
