Philine Sonny - “In Denial”
Bochum, Germany-based singer-songwriter Philine Sonny has just released her new EP, Invader, and in celebration of this, we are delighted to feature yet another track from its contents: “In Denial.”
As the song first enters the ears, listeners will be unable to ignore the fantastic, gritty bass line that gloriously drives this musical vessel. An energetic tempo is provided via the drum kit and, straight out of the gate, “In Denial” appears to be leaps and bounds darker and heavier than the last time we heard from Philine.
Effected guitar emerges, beholding a thick, saturated layer of chorus and reverb and providing ear candy during the bass-driven verses. Philine’s vocal is completely on point, just as we’ve come to expect from her craft, emotively delivering a bold, coming-of-age message tantamount to “chasing an impossible dream.”
The hook, however, is where listeners shall discover a treasure trove containing angst-ridden walls of distorted guitars amidst a heavy-hitting rhythm section. Rounding out the production, Philine has superbly double-tracked her vocal, culminating in a lively shift that perfectly contrasts the vibe of the verses.
In the middle eight, Philine is unafraid to parade a sound that veers intensely into the domain of alt rock. It comes complete with an epically syncopated rhythm and hard stops and starts, before ultimately revealing a dynamic break that provides some calm before the final storm of choruses.
About “In Denial,” Philine adds: “It doesn’t hide the pain that comes with hopeful, youthful persistence being overshadowed by the realization that some things just aren’t meant to be. It’s also a reminder that being mad is a necessary step in learning how to stand up for yourself.”
