Outpost Drive - “Envious Heart”

Anglo-American duo Outpost Drive have just released the powerful and anthemic indie rock track, “Envious Heart.”

Envious Heart” is a warm, sure-footed track that builds from understated, delicate beginnings to something that is exquisitely cinematic and soulful. The acoustic guitar forms the soft fabric of this track with rich, organic, and ambient sounds. Each note feels intimate, as if it’s being played right next to you in the same room. The drums pulse with a relaxed, steady rhythm as the bass punctuates the reflective mood.

As the track reaches its second half, Outpost Drive shift gears, moving from the vulnerable, unembellished, airy mood to a more intense and emotionally charged crescendo. Passionate and anthemic, bluesy electric guitar begins to soar emotively and fluidly as it blurs the lines between lead and rhythm. Underneath, the bass begins to swagger, finding a slick groove.

Throughout “Envious Heart,” the vocals beautifully guide us through the music, making the track feel cohesive and compelling. At first, tender and almost conversational, the two vocals intertwine with a heartfelt sense of reflection. Building authentically and with pleasing hints of gospel thrown in for good measure, the tone shifts effortlessly to a more full, expressive rawness.

Willow, from Outpost Drive, recalls: “I wrote this song way back in 2015 and it never left my archives, only existing as a rough demo that was never released. For some reason I’d play it to Mary Bragg when we were hanging out in my room in LA. She always used to say how much she loved the song and constantly begged me to record it. Once we formed Outpost Drive in 2023, it became an obvious contender for our Montreal EP. After sending all the rough demos to our producer Tyler Neil Johnson, the song made his selection and its fate was secured. It was meant to exist with Mary Bragg’s voice on it, almost 10 years after it was written. I’m so excited the world finally gets to hear it!”

With hints of everyone from Traffic to The Band to Crazy Horse, “Envious Heart” is an organically cohesive track that stands tall and defiant.
