Nova Soon - “Antarctica”

London-based indie folk artist Noah de Grunwald, aka Nova Soon, has just released the haunting ballad “Antarctica.”

Antarctica” is founded on the intricate yet delicate tones of fingerpicked acoustic guitar. Rich with arpeggios and melodic lines, it creates a seamless, free-flowing atmosphere that exquisitely evokes a variety of emotions, from fond, nostalgic memories and melancholy to vulnerability, and subtly more forceful dynamics that are darker and moodier in tone.

Fleshing out the track are beautifully atmospheric synths that give a sense of space and imbue the track with an ethereal, dreamlike quality. Light touches of piano are also interwoven, adding harmonic richness whilst tenderly supporting the acoustic fingerpicking. These layers beautifully ebb and flow into a haunting, immersive crescendo of increasingly distorted sound scaping that is filled with a raw sense of reflective sadness.

The intimate, gentle, and soulful vocal has the same lyrical and fluid phrasing as Donovan, if you removed the Bob Dylan inflections. It sensitively guides the listener through the emotional peaks and valleys of this track, infusing the composition with a deep sense of feeling. The track is masterfully executed and rich with depth and emotion, making me want to draw comparisons to fragile ballad “Goodbye Blue Sky” by Pink Floyd.

Antarctica” is the first single to be taken from Nova Soon’s forthcoming EP, Goodbyetown. Connect with Nova Soon: Spotify | Instagram | Facebook | Website
