Night Tapes - “drifting”

UK-based Night Tapes have just released the chilled, groove-laden dream pop track “drifting.”

drifting” is founded on a rich, funky, pulsating bass groove. It relentlessly grooves underneath the composition, creating a lush sensation of movement that you will find hard not to move to. Locking the bass groove in place is a no frills, barebones kick / snare percussive beat, which gives this track a late 1990s dance / electronic vibe.

The song’s melody is gently padded out by analogue-toned synth keys and electric piano that offer a warm sense of brightness. Splashes of electric guitar also arpeggiate in places, helping to enhance the chilled, laid-back vibes. As the song progresses, slightly sour-toned, dreamy keys elegantly begin to enhance the weaving melodies of the track. Electric guitar also emerges to slickly enhance the persistent groove.

drifting” is a wonderful track, full of infectious danceable grooves and melodies, but it is the vocal that the real highlight. The whole performance feels reminiscent of early Grimes or possible Beth Plumb from Tokyo Tea Room. It is fun, playful, and light and permeates an exuberant sense of space as it is pushed frequently into a world of heavy reverb.

Night Tapes describe the meaning behind the track: “We wrote this song over a few weeks in the middle of summer. It contains a paradox and to be honest we’re still in the process of discovering the nuances of meaning in it. I think that sometimes drifting can take you where you need to be, other times it can take you to the open sea where your feet can’t touch the ground anymore.”

drifting” is simply irresistible, whether it is the stunning bass lines or the magical vocals that soothingly deliver the lyrics. This track will sweep you away.
