Niall Summerton - “No One”
North Yorkshire, England-based singer-songwriter Niall Summerton has returned to the blog with “No One,” a delightfully lo-fi, indie rock lullaby.
We have been featuring Summerton’s singles all year and it is safe to say that he is one of our favorite finds, particularly when it comes to this brand of heartfelt slacker-rock. “No One” begins with a warbling track of clean electric guitar, imbuing the tune with the nostalgic warmth of classic analogue.
It is not long before the drums and bass emerge, sonically matching the raw, glowing vibe of the guitar. “No One” is the kind of track that makes it very easy to imagine it being performed right in front of you, with each element taking up only the required amount of space.
This makes it very easy for Summerton’s vocal performance to find its way through the arrangement and nestle itself into your soul– particularly if you happen to be a fan of Nick Drake, Duster, or Elliott Smith. Subtle layers of auxiliary vocals find their place, as a flowing lead guitar instills a higher melody.
Ebb and flow is provided via a dramatic dynamic break in the center of the song, where Summerton offers the refrain: “No one’s coming in...” From there, “No One” returns to the robust nature of a full-band arrangement, allowing listeners to drift off into a dreamy and nostalgic bout of introspection.
