Nathan Storey - “Progress”

From his recently released EP, Shades, North Carolina-based singer-songwriter Nathan Storey has just sent over the rich and enticing sounds of “Progress.”

The song begins with a confident rhythm brought forth by the drum kit, resulting in a moderately upbeat production that is guaranteed to get your feet tapping. Above the bass and acoustic guitar, an organ pumps some delicious tones into the soundscape, slightly reminiscent of “Sgt. Pepper’s…” but, at the same time, leaning more toward a raw, Wilco-esque kind of vibe.

Some melodic licks from the lead guitar carve a path through the arrangement, wide enough for the lyrics to come pouring in. And Storey’s vocal performance instantly hits our fondness for all things gritty, completely nailing our indie folk/ Americana sweet spot. While we have no immediate comparisons to draw, we will say that his voice reminds us enough of home that it carries us back for multiple listens.

Ear candy is provided upon the arrival of a sweet and delicate vocal harmony, adding width to the already stellar soundscape and welcoming us as new fans. In its five minute duration, music lovers are bound to get lost within its tenderhearted sway, as “Progress” is a chill, folksy slice of musical heaven that will instantly captivate all who hear. And if you find that’s the case, be sure to check out the rest of the EP, conveniently embedded for you here:
